I have been working as a professional musician for over 40 years. During this time, I have suffered my fair share of debilitating attacks of performance nerves which also contributed to repetitive strain injuries.

It was not until I was over 40 that I decided to give the Alexander Technique a try. I think I was really desperate. I found it transformative and after many years of lessons, I decided I would like to train to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique.

I qualified in 2015 having trained with Karen Wentworth at the Alexander Technique Studio in Wandsworth having completed 1,600 hours of intensive training. I am no longer crippled by performance nerves, but have learned how to manage them through using Alexander Technique, and I’m lucky enough to still be working as a musician.

Nowadays I teach private Alexander Technique lessons at my house or at the Graham Spicer Institute in New Malden where I can hire a small studio, which has easy access for those who are not mobile enough to climb the stairs in my house.

I have given workshops at the University of Surrey where I still teach, also for the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity Laban and Rugby School. For several years I gave introductory courses at Morley  College and have given several classes on Public Speaking for them. Being a musician with a former actress as a mother has given me a fairly interesting perspective on how to help people to perform at their best.

Nobody could have been more surprised than me to find that the skills required to become a professional musician, gave me an understanding of how to help people with many kinds of performing, from public speaking to a stressful interview situation.

I am also very keen to help older people to keep moving well, giving them confidence to walk without the fear of falling, working on balance, better breathing and the mechanics of how we walk.

It’s never too late to learn the Alexander Technique, although for me it’s become a bit of an obsession as my family would tell you.

If you are interested in a preliminary lesson, please get in contact, or I can offer a one to one Zoom lesson if you live too far away.
